WHO IS THE CAMP FOR:
Camp Onwards is a therapeutic sibling camp for brothers
and sisters of children who have or had cancer
aged 6-13 years. Due to increasing number of siblings applying
for camp, we have had to give priority to families who have
a child who has been recently diagnosed and is still on
treatment, families who live in the country and bereaved
families. Families with a child who has been off treatment
for 5+years may also be considered in a 2nd round of prioritising
if numbers persist to be high.
There is some flexibility in these criteria for individual
family circumstances. Please apply if in doubt as
it is easier to cancel a booking but not to add to numbers
once full. Feel free to contact Kylie or Ranita to discuss
things further. For those aged 16 years + there is the possibility
of being a camp counsellor. Please contact Ranita on 9340
8803 to register your interest and obtain an outline of
counsellor responsibilites.
STAFF
Staff will comprise of PMH employees and other trained
volunteers. All staff have valid Police Clearances. A first
aid officer will always be present. The staff ratio will
be 1:5 .
ACTIVITIES
Camp activities include an outdoor adventure programme
with activites such as horse riding, conoeing, a party night,
a movie eveing and more. Another important component of
the camp are the group sessions which will run every morining
for one hour. These sessions also involve fun activities,
but in smaller groups of 8-10 children of the same age.
They provide the opportunity to express and explore issues
related to the cancer experience if they wish, and provide
positive strategies to help the siblings. Meeting others
in similar situations can be very helpful.
